Job Description
| Career opportunities in the Human Service field are available for caring persons who want to make a difference in the lives of people with mental and/or physical disabilities. A high school diploma or equivalent is required for potential career advancement opportunities. Possible positions include Direct Care Worker (DCW), Day Programmer, Job Coach, Shift Supervisor, Assistant Manager, and Assistant Director of Services. |
| Three weeks of formal training classes are required. These classes are taught through Community Mental Health and McBride Quality Care Services. Once training is complete, a DCW assumes responsibility for the direct personal care of persons with disabilities. This job involves providing, assisting, or supervising hygiene, grooming, the selection of appropriate clothing, and the dispensing of medications. The DCW also assumes responsibility for the cleanliness and organization of the consumer's environmental space. |
| Recreational activities are very important to our residents, and DCWs accompany and participate in a variety of activities, which include, but are not limited to swimming, bowling, team sports, as well as event within the community, such as movies, restaurants, sporting events, etc. |

DCWs are given specific responsibilities to help the residents achieve their goals. For example, a resident's goal may be to learn to brush his or her teeth independently. The DCW's responsibility may be to provide hand over hand assistance with this task, until the resident is able to complete the task independently. In addition, Community Mental Health approved Behavior Programs may be implemented by trained staff when dealing with behavioral issues with a consumer. |
| DCWs are assigned to a specific residence. Staff ratios are excellent, and depend upon the abilities of the person residing in the residence. When a consumer is very dependent and require more care, the ratio of client to staff may be 1:3. For a more independent consumer, the ratio may be 1:6.
